Amsterdam is a notorious and at times controversial city. It’s got a rich tradition of legalizing things that often occur only behind closed doors in more conservative parts of the world.
Amsterdam’s famous red-light district, aka “De Wallen”, draws many tourists from around the globe wanting to partake in or watch the hedonism. In this district you really shouldn’t even try to take any photos of the girls unless you want a broken camera and a broken face! However, being a daredevil and surviving a death-defying Italian bus ride, I thought I’d take my chances and managed to get some good undercover shots.
If you haven’t heard of the red-light district before (hey you there under the rock!) it’s an urban area that permits sex-oriented businesses, such as strip clubs and prostitution. In addition, there are also plenty of coffee shops that serve giant, frothing cups of marijuana. No, I’m just kidding, the marijuana’s not in a cup. It’s usually in a joint or brownie.
It's important to know that Amsterdam is more than just hookers and pot though. It has a rich culture and has a lot to offer such as museums like The Anne Frank Museum, art, beautiful canals, friendly people and delicious food.
While in the Netherlands, I also visited Volendam. This harbor town was completely iced over when I visited, and it was amazing to see so much frozen terrain at once. All the ice skaters taking advantage of the conditions was definitely a huge change of scenery for a Floridian.
