Without any doubt whatsoever, Metallica is my favorite band of all time. I remember hearing of them in the late 80's and thought their album artwork was amazing. I heard a few songs here and there and then someone lent me the "Master of Puppets" album and it was the beginning of a 25+ year obsession. The guitar sound, the energy, the power, the lyrics, the artwork... I was hypnotized.
Metallica made me want to play guitar and start my own band, I learned by playing along with all their records and watching their live videos. I studied the lyrics, researched their history, and even started to listen to the bands that influenced them. Since their music is not easy to play, it led me to develop a playing ability at a pretty good level. It took years to master the speed, palm muting, and solos.
The band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles and are credited with helping to invent thrash metal which is characterized by fast tempos and overall aggression. They've gone on to sell over 150 million albums worldwide and were inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. They have become one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time and have brought heavy metal into the mainstream.
My very first concert ever was Metallica at the Miami Arena in 1996 which blew me away because their stage took up the entire arena floor, I've seen them a total of 5 times since then and have met them twice. Above, you can see me showing James Hetfield a photo of when we met in 2000. I got to chat with each member for about 10 min each which was really cool.
This show was their first time back in South Florida since 2009 and they completely nailed every aspect of the performance. The setlist included a good mix of old and new and they played each song flawlessly. At the end of the show, I was supposed to pick up a signed copy of the setlist which you see to the left but literally forgot. The band actually contacted me and arranged to ship to my house... how amazing is it?!
